Haiti soccer recycling project…

I have two sons, Simon and Jamie.  Simon, the elder one, is a professional photographer, among other things.
Apart from loving to travel and photograph wild landscapes, he is conscientious and community-minded.  Back when Haiti suffered the great devastating earthquake, he and some pals went down with as much water, food, mosquito nets and medication as they could muster. Among all these things were a dozen footballs. These were a big hit with the local kids (and bigger kids!), who’d been mucking around in the dust with make-shift balls.  Moved by the smiles on the boys’ faces, Simon went back to New York with all kind of ideas. He contacted Linda Ford’s Downtown United Soccer Club/Soccer Recycle, and Patrick Lucian, a Haitian who lives in Boston. Between them, they set up the Haiti Soccer Recycling Project, gathering new or used jerseys, shorts and socks, cleats and soccer balls, which they take down to Haiti twice a year. Not content with just that, Simon organized a soccer league on Ile-a-Vache, just off the southwest coast of Haiti.  He brought them the gear and trophies and created a soccer tournament for four of the 22 schools on the island.  He is in the process of filming a documentary about the program.  HIs next trip is in July.

To see Simon’s photos of the teams proudly wearing the soccer gear at the tournaments, and the beautiful Ile-a-Vache, see his website:  http://www.simonrussellphotography.net/index.php#mi=2&pt=1&pi=10000&s=0&p=20&a=0&at=0

More from Robert Wyatt (2) …

I had asked Robert to let me know if he found anything ‘wrong’ in my memoir.  Apart from me implying he was rich because he was wearing expensive clothes when I first met him (which I put right in a previous blog), he says to add the following:

“Incidentally, both Carla Bley and Nick Mason first heard Gary on Rock Bottom (Robert’s first solo album).  I love it when that happens: how musicians find each other.  I did a one-off solo gig of this album – Gary joined me for that so it was just the two of us.”

He also said to add in my concert list: LIVE AT DRURY LANE (with Mongezi Feza, Laurie Allan, Mike Oldfield, Nick Mason, John Peel, Julie Tippett, Hugh Hopper, Fred Frith, et al).
“Gary and Mongs were in wonderful form on this – and it was Robert Wyatt’s [sic] last live gig ever.”
I certainly meant this to go in because it was such a great concert, but somehow it got left out of the last draft of my book. *

Lastly, he said I should add to the discography: FICTITIOUS SPORTS – Nick Mason’s solo album with Carla Bley, on which Gary and Robert played.  *ditto for this; I wrote it in the list, but it disappeared.  How I wish I didn’t make mistakes!

If anyone else finds anything ‘wrong’ – or something that should be added, please let me know!

Italian blogs!

I am daily astonished to get messages from people in places far and wide.  I had forgotten how many times Gary played in Europe, especially in Italy, back in the ’70s and ’80s… with The Brotherhood of Breath and with The Carla Bley Band.  The Italian fans in those days are still fans today and have written to say so.  One of the blogs is by Sergio Amadori.  He calls his blog Hibou, Anemone & Bear (I must ask him why).  He posted an excerpt from my memoir, and chose a paragraph that, to me, is key to the book.  http://www.hibou-anemone-bear.com/2013_03_01_archive.html  (scroll down)
He wrote a second blog, with Robert Wyatt’s review of my book:  http://tinyurl.com/d64lal4
The result: my books are selling in Italy!
